Fourteen months in, Clara thought she knew Emma completely. Then Emma tells her what she has loved for years, and asks to teach her.

Emma has taught life drawing to adults for eight years. She knows how to break a difficult thing into steps. The first lesson isn't about hands at all. It's about looking: how she breathes when she's calm, what her face does, what it looks like when she wants to stop and can't say so.

Clara is afraid of hurting her. Emma says that's exactly why it should be her.
